Gapminder – TED Talk on Data Animation

Link: Ted Talk

Hans Rosling from Gapminder (www.gapminder.org) displays some data animation applications he works with to demonstrate change of indicators of global health over time. The application helps to animate and highlight the data as it moves through time and utilizes movement and labelling to attract the viewer’s attention to points of interest and important comparisons. Also brings in powerful visualizations of context: demonstrating how averages are often dangerous to interpret.

You can play around with the tool on gapminder’s website, and many of the other data visualizations and animations that have been produced in the past years: http://www.gapminder.org/world/#
