This map, produced by the American Regional Plan Association shows the emerging mega regions of the United States and Canada. The map utilizes a number of different techniques to convey the location of these new regions. Proportional symbols were used to show city population with a colour attributed to a specific region. In the same colour, a uniform surface shading is used to demarcate fuzzy borders of the region, using a transparent and lighter shade of the same colour. Regions are named with adjacent text and a minimal legend is provided. Underneath, a simple, light grey map is used as reference. This map combines great design with a huge amount of data to convey very interesting ideas about regional planning for the future. The website below contains more examples of maps showing information about transportation and regional planning.
