History of Data Visualization and Cartography

This interactive infographic by Michael Friendly and Daniel J. Denis, gives a chronology of different innovations in visualization over much of recorded human history. The graphic uses labelled and coloured dots to specify the date of the visualization technique. By clicking on a dot, a pop-up appears with more information about the point. The time can be scrolled through by merely clicking and dragging the image. Very interesting facts are available here, such as when the first data graph was made (1644 in Spain by Michael F. van Langren). The tool uses the Timeline widget (Link), with use of XML fed from a database.
