Internews and Nai have come together to produce this map showing incidents of violence against journalism in Afghanistan. The map uses proportional symbols with labels to visualize the number of incidents in a certain province for one year, or cumulatively over all. By rolling over on a province, that province’s incidents are shown in a graph over all the years in question. Other information such as total number of media outlets or journalists can be overlaid as a choropleth. This map was created using MapBox and TileMill, utilizing both tools’ advanced design capabilities to create an attractive map and user interface. This map is an example of how generalized data can be questioned and teased apart: if the user feels the need to better understand a certain province’s situation, they are provided information by interacting with that province, through a roll over of the mouse.
