A Handsome Atlas is a work by Jonathan Soma, a web developer with the Brooklyn Brainery. The website is a listing of many maps and data visualizations produced by the US census bureau after the Civil War (late 1800s). A large number of maps and data visualizations are provided with a sleek and simple user interface, allowing users to zoom into the data to get a more complete understanding. This interface goes beyond displaying a mere image – the interface displays the visualization as tiles which, as the user zooms in, display greater and greater detail. This allows the user to get a general understanding of the map from a zoomed-out position (without unnecessary detail), and allows for greater detail to be chosen as one drills down into specific parts of the visualization. The maps are loaded using Leaflet map tiles.
