Cultivating a Governance Model for a Community Land Trust in Parkdale /// Portfolio: Urban Planning

CLTIn the winter of 2012, I managed a project with my colleagues Sean Major, Stephanie Ireland, Amy Bath and Daniel Gerard to develop a governance model for an emerging community land trust (CLT) in Toronto’s Downtown west side (Parkdale-Roncesvalles). The project was commissioned by Parkdale’s Activity-Recreation Centre (PARC) a community group in the neighbourhood which was beginning on the path to developing a land trust.

Much of our work involved laying the groundwork and best practices for CLT development and management. We performed numerous interviews with CLTs across the United States and Canada, as well as performing a thorough examination of the current political and social conditions within Parkdale. With this information we synthesized a governance model and a set of recommendations for PARC as they move forward.

We presented our results both at Toronto’s City Hall in December 2012 and at a smaller public consultation in Parkdale in January 2013. If you would like to follow the neighbourhood’s progress, click here
