The Halton Crime Map is a tool made by the Halton Regional Police Service showing the locations of recent crimes in Halton Region (a region southwest of the City of Toronto). The map features a variety of symbols representing calls to the police. Each point provides the date and approximate location of the crime, as well as options to share or tip off the police.
Interestingly, there is a pre-map legal notice informing users to not rely on the map and that any use of the map is at the user’s own risk. It’s noticeable how conscious the developers were in regards to having the proper legal caution. This is likely a concern for a lot of government divisions and agencies who want to create web maps, but are apprehensive about possible legal implications.
The map pushes the boundaries of police collaboration with residents, providing an interactive platform for residents to understand what is happening in their community. The map is made using Google Maps API.
