Mapping transit distance /// Interesting patterns from modernist streets

I was digging through some old maps I had made a while back of my neighbourhood, and thought it would be nice to post some of them. This one shows the distance to the closest bus stop (the dots) from the houses and apartments in my residential neighbourhood in Etobicoke (Highway 427 and Rathburn). The map reproduced in all its drafty authenticity (not sure why I capitalized ‘Bus Stop’) is below:

Closest Facility Test Etobicoke nat neighbourHere, red means that area is far (500-800 m) from the closest TTC bus stop. The interesting thing about this map is the small red splotches right beside bus stops. These are a function of the complex street systems imposed in these modernist residential neighbourhoods. I visualized the paths that people would walk in this neighbourhood as well, which I show below:

Here, green lines are the shorter distances, red lines are the longer ones. I overlaid green as the top-most layer and red the bottom-most so that the path gets ‘hotter’ as distance increases. I think these maps really show how complicated movements are in these neighbourhoods, though certain important features are missing (for example, pedestrian paths that cut through neighbourhoods).

Overall, seems like people have good access to transit, though the story might change when you factor in where a person works, the route, the type of work etc. etc. etc. I’m not doing a PhD in this though/I’m not paid enough to analyze the whole city’s transit system, so I’m only giving out teasers.
